Dustin Lovell didn't grow up hunting. He grew up around it — cousins chasing deer and turkey in Nebraska — but never got pulled in until ten years ago, when a friend named Adam Wellman started asking the right questions on quiet nights and one of them finally said: alright, let's do this. Hunter safety. Deer tags. Adam beside him for every step. It snowballed downhill from there.

Now Dustin owns Ullr's Archery and, by his own math, spends way too much on gear. He's bringing the next two up into it — a five-year-old son already mimicking the shotgun stations with a broom handle, and a daughter not yet one. The lesson his late father left him: find the experiences they'll remember, and don't miss them.

Dustin teamed up with Robby Kroger of the Origins Foundation — the crew behind last summer's Lionheart — to build something the West hasn't quite seen. The Colorado Conservation Film Festival lands at The Greenhouse in Windsor, north of the Denver gravity well and close enough to pull hunters up from the south and in from Wyoming and Nebraska. The intent is to grow it into one of the biggest film festivals in the West.

The pitch isn't about trophies. Hunting films are welcome — Dustin won't be upset to see them — but the festival wants the part most films cut: the year of preparation, the unsuccessful seasons, the moral pause when a cow elk's calf stands up behind her. A really good filmmaker captures more than the pull of the trigger. Submissions are open through June 30, and ten to fifteen honest minutes can move someone more than a two-hour documentary.

It all comes back to the conversation. People are scared to have one — afraid of the judgment, the label — so they don't talk at all. Dustin's answer is to arm yourself with intelligent positioning, take the emotion out, and stay curious. Most people, he's found, aren't hard-line anything. They just want to understand what it actually takes.

"Nine times out of ten, I'm just taking my bow for a hike."

That's the festival's whole job — give people a room to ask the questions they've never had anyone to ask. Buy a ticket, watch a few films, hear some country music, eat barbecue, have a little bourbon. Worst case, you had a great night. Best case, someone walks out seeing it differently.

Colorado is ground zero. Ballot-box biology — the wolves, the cat-hunting ban — keeps putting the state's heritage up for a public vote, and Dustin calls it the most dangerous thing the state has faced. The prescription isn't complicated: register and vote, donate five dollars, rebuild a trail, follow Dan Gates and CRWM, pack out the trash someone else left behind. Death by a thousand cuts only wins if nobody's paying attention.
